The purpose of this design was to incorporate prominent characteristics from various flying insects such as butterflies, beetles, and dragonflies into creative original designs. The distinct lines, shapes and bold colors found on insects were highlighted and exaggerated to create a psychedelic feel that is eye catching; an ensemble that entrances you into a euphoric state of mind.

Multiple colors of Dupioni Silks with different warp and filling yarns were incorporated to represent the changing iridescent colors found on the shells of beetles. Prominent lines were used to pattern the bodice and pants accenting the shapes found at the connection points of the three separate body parts in insects. The bodice consists of many panels that were each boned for a structured appearance to emphasize the hard shell of insects and allowed the light to play off the subtle texture created in the silk. Six individual wings were created from twenty-four pieces cut from PVC sheeting and welding together with a  heat gun. Metal "L" brackets and fiber glass mesh were then used to attach the wings to the backpack form. The backpack itself consisted of layered fiberglass mesh, allowing flexibility while strips of PVC sheeting were added for support, and coated with resin to hold it together. The wing and backpack frame were covered with fiberfill to increase comfort and add dimension to the outfit as a whole. Quick release buckles in the center back allow for ease of donning and doffing while natural flowing shapes were used on the wings to capture the chaos embedded in the exterior of insects. The silk was then distressed and frayed to give a more organic flutter-like texture and hand sewn onto the wing frame. The wings were then embellished with Swarovski Crystals for added excitement.

The skinny pants emphasize the natural muscles and joints in the leg, a prominent characteristic in insects. Made in stretch velvet, the texture and print of the fabric subtlety reference the hair found on the legs of particular insects. The use of velvet and sparkle dust to embellish the futuristic shoes is inspired by the natural shimmering dust that protects the wings of insects such as moths.

The bodice consists of panels that each were boned for a structured appearance to emphasize the hard shell of insects and allowed the light to play off the subtle texture created in the silk, and extends down the back in the form of small tail wings. Carefully hand sewn into the shoulders of the bodice, the Elytra; the outer hard shell that protects the inner wings of a beetle is represented. Draped and patterned to be fully open, as if the model were ready to take flight with the inner wings hand sewn into the waist of the bodice resting at the hip.

Upper and lower wings are supported with descending layers of crinoline lace with 1/8' aluminum wire. Silks were distressed and frayed to give a more organic flutter-like texture and then attached to crinoline wing structure, while organic flowing patterns were used on the wings to capture the natural chaotic shapes embedded in insects. Swarovski crystals were then added for further visual excitement. Velvet and sparkle dust were then used to embellish the futuristic shoes inspired by the natural shimmering dust that protects the wings of insects such as moths.

The head piece was sculpted out of clay. A plaster mold was created and casted with paper which was then covered in matching fabrics and embellishments and attached to a fabric covered headband.

Prominent lines were used to pattern the skirt and bodice, accenting the shapes found at the connection point of separate body parts in insects. The bodice consisted of numerous panels which were boned at each seam to   emulate the hard shell of a beetle and to allow light to play off the bold texture of the velvet. Four individual wings were constructed from eighteen pieces of cut PVC sheeting that were then welding together with a heat gun. The wings were then attached to the backpack form with metal L-brackets and fiberglass mesh.
